Medicina Democratica ha aderito alla lettera sottostante in cui si richiede di inserire l’amianto crisotilo (“amianto bianco” – serpentino) tra le sostanze soggette a restrizione e/o divieto di esportazione dalla Convenzione di Rotterdam (del 11.09.1998).
Questa Convenzione detta anche PIC (recepita dalla Unione Europea nel 2002 ed entrata in vigore il 24.02.2004) include tra le sostanze “al bando” diversi pesticidi (come la “sporca dozzina” che include DDT, l’Aldrin, il Lindano, l’esaclorobenzene, il Dinoseb, Pentaclorofenolo, i PFAS ecc).
Nell’elenco delle sostanze soggette alla Convenzione vi è, dall’inizio, anche l’amianto crocidolite (“amianto blu”) e successivamente gli altri amianti del gruppo degli anfiboli : actinolite, grunerite, antofillite, tremolite (ecco il testo della Convezione di Rotterdam aggiornata).

La lettera che pubblichiamo, in cui si richiede l’inserimento anche dell’amianto crisotilo nelle restrizioni e nei divieti della Convenzione di Rotterdam di cui è previsto l’incontro di aggiornamento (COP9) a Ginevra, completerebbe l’introduzione di restrizioni all’esportazione (per la UE un divieto scontato visto che tutti questi tipi di amianto non possono neppure essere estratti/prodotti) per gli amianti legalmente considerati tali.

An Appeal to the 161 Parties at COP 9 of the Rotterdam Convention
No more delays, no more vetoes!!!

Dear Delegates,
We the organisations listed below, representing those most exposed to and suffering from deadly exposures to asbestos fibre:
• deplore vested interests blocking the listing of chrysotile asbestos on the Rotterdam Convention at the last 6 Conferences of the Parties (COPs);
• demand that recommendations of the Convention’s own Chemical Review Committee by respected and supported on the basis of the clear scientific and medical evidence presented;
• call on all Parties to COP9 to support reform of Article 22 of the Rotterdam Convention at this COP in order to allow a 75% majority vote of the Parties to include a chemical on Annex III should consensus fail;
• call on all Parties to support listing of chrysotile asbestos on Annex III of the Convention at COP9, the7th time it has been recommended.
Further we call on the United Nations to urgently commence efforts to initiate a standalone Asbestos Convention that will move beyond prior informed consent and provide a mechanism to enact a global ban of chrysotile asbestos.
Asbestos vested interests, led by the International Chrysotile Association, have signalled their intention to block reform of the Convention and the listing of chrysotile asbestos via veto by a small number of parties who profit from its trade.
It is unconscionable that the financial interests of the few can block the desires of the many to protect vulnerable populations from toxic exposures. The signatories of this letter are unanimous in their belief that to salvage the credibility of the Rotterdam Convention, chrysotile asbestos must be included on Annex III and the Convention’s voting system must be reformed. It is time for action.
